Abstract
814,675. Sparking plus. GLOBE-UNION Inc. July 2, 1956, No. 20467/56. Class 7(4) [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrode assembly for sparking plugs includes a hollow cylindrical ground electrode 28, a high alumina porcelain bushing 34 within the ground electrode, a centre electrode 30 provided with a shoulder 40 at its lower end which is engageable with the porcelain bushing, a glass insulation 44 being formed by placing powdered glass in the end portion of the ground electrode around the centre electrode, heating the glass until plastic and pressing the centre electrode 'into the ground electrode to compress the glass therebetween until the shoulder seats on the bushing and the glass is fused to form a solid insulation bonded to the electrodes. As shown the sparking plug is a low tension sparking plug. Upon cooling the shell shrinks slightly and holds the ground electrode 28 firmly. The insulator 12 is of high alumina porcelain. It is held within the shell by an aluminium seal 22. Both electrodes are made of a metal such as a copper-tungsten alloy. The gap is 0.005 to 0.01 inches.
