Abstract

892,935. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Jan. 25, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3825/60. Class 7(4). A spark plug has a composite centre electrode comprising a terminal screw 4 and a centre wire 5 which extend respectively in the larger and smaller diameter portions of a stepped axial bore 3 in the plug insulator 2 and are conductively connected to each other and sealed to the larger diameter portion of the bore by a conductive sealing composition 8, the centre wire being of silver and having a headed end portion which is sealed directly to the insulator bore adjacent the junction of the larger and smaller diameter portions thereof. In manufacture the insulator and centre electrode assembly is heated to 900‹C. and axial pressure is then applied to the flanged end of the terminal screw 4 so as to press the lower end thereof against the sealing composition 8. Pressure in excess of that required to effect complete compaction of all the sealing composition is relieved by partial extrusion of the neck 15 of the centre wire 5 through the collar thereof and into the narrower portion of the bore 3 adjacent the shoulder 7 as shown at 17 in Fig. 4. The sealing composition 8 comprises powdered glass and copper. Dimensions of various parts are specified.
