Abstract

924,974. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1961, No. 31885/61. Class 7(4) [Also in Group XXXVI] A spark-plug comprises a one-piece metal shell 4, in which is secured a ceramic insulator 6 having in its centre-bore an electrode assembly 8, the lower end of which forms the centre electrode 10 and the upper end an electrical terminal 12. A fused powdered glass and copper seal 14 bonded to the upper and lower ends of the electrode 10 and terminal 12 respectively and to insulator 6 provides a gas-tight seal between assembly 8 and insulator 6. The wide upper part of the insulator centre bore ends near the plane of the upper edge of metal shell 4 and the top of the lower part of the rod 12 with enlarged diameter, this arrangement giving maximum flashover distance between the shell 4 and terminal 12 over the insulator surface without sacrificing structural strength. A connector incorporating a rubber boot (see Group XXXVI) fits on the insulator, which has ridges 17 to assist the seal and increase the flashover distance. A resilient conducting sleeve 32 fits over terminal 12, an internal bead 34 on the sleeve engaging an annular groove 20 on terminal 12. In other modifications Figs 3, 4, 5, 6 (not shown) the upper part of the terminal may be screwthreaded and the lower enlarged portion may have an annular flange to form the bottom wall of the well.
