Abstract

918,402. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960], No. 38517/61. Class 7(4) A sparking plug has a composite centre electrode assembly comprising a spindle 16 arranged coaxially within a substantially constant diameter portion of a centre-bore in the plug insulator, the spindle having a firing tip portion 28 which extends from the end of the bore and an intermediate shank portion which is of increased diameter between its ends, and the space between the shank portion and the wall of the bore is filled with a body of metal of good heat conductivity. The firing tip may be of platinum, the shank portion may be of nickel and the metal between the bore wall and the shank may be silver. A conductive glass seal 46 comprising a mixture of glass and nickel or copper powder abuts the upper surface of the body 44 of silver. The end 10 of the shell has secured thereto a pair of platinum electrodes 18 of which one is shown.
