Abstract
556,330. Sparking-plugs. LODGE PLUGS, Ltd.. HOPPS, B., and SMITHELLS, C. J. March 28, 1942, No. 4137. [Class 7 (iv)] In a sparking plug having a ceramic insulator a and a central electrode consisting of a metal core d with an attached or integral firing tip e of smaller diameter, products of combustion are excluded from contact with the core d by a seal f consisting at least in part of vitreous material between the insulator and the inner end of the core. The seal f, in the form of a pellet of powdered borosilicate glass and alumina with a binder such as paraffin wax, is slipped over the tip e as in Fig. 4 and the assembly heated to 850‹ C. under endwise pressure. The core may be of copper, silver or other metal and the tip of platinum or platinum alloy, or they may be in one piece of nickel or nickel alloy. The shoulder at the junction of the core and tip may be square, Fig. 4, or tapered, Fig. 6.
