Abstract

The core of a sparking plug electrode is made of a sintered molybdenum-copper or sintered molybdenum-silver composition. It may consist of a base selected from molybdenum, the carbides nitrides and borides of molybdenum and compositions thereof together with copper or silver. A preferred method of producing the core consists in mixing powdered ingredients in the desired proportion, pressing the mixture and sintering it in a reducing atmosphere. Powdered molybdenum alone may be pressed to the desired shape, sintered and during or after sintering impregnated by heating in contact with one or more low melting point metals such as copper or silver. Examples of suitable compositions of the core are:-60 per cent. molybdenum, 40 per cent. silver; 75 per cent. molybdenum, 25 per cent. copper; 50 per cent. molybdenum, 50 per cent. copper or silver; 65 per cent. molybdenum carbide, 35 per cent. silver. Examples of suitable alloys for a sheath for the electrode core are as follows:-96 per cent. platinum, 4 per cent. tungsten; 96 per cent. platinum, 4 per cent. molybdenum; 90 per cent. platinum, 10 per cent. rhodium; 88 per cent. platinum, 12 per cent. palladium.
