Abstract
The following rhenium alloys may be used for sparking plug or spark gap electrodes:-rhenium 51-99.5 per cent. the remainder at least one of the platinum group metals; rhenium 51-99.5 per cent. the remainder at least one of tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum; rhenium 70-95 per cent. the remainder an eutectic composition containing at least two of the metals nickel, iron, cobalt and molybdenum. Alternatively, the electrodes are of a sintered metallic composition containing 70-95 per cent. rhenium and the remainder nickel and copper which produce a liquid phase during sintering. A core material for the electrodes comprises at least 10 per cent. of two of the elements molybdenum, copper and nickel and the remainder tungsten plus rhenium, or an alloy comprising 5 per cent. nickel, 5 per cent. molybdenum and the remainder tungsten plus rhenium.
