532,447. Alloys. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 14, 1939, No. 25830. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1938. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Alloys for electric contacts comprise refractory metal powders, such as tungsten, molybdenum, or tantalum, bonded with a copper alloy containing 0.5-5 per cent. each of cobalt and iron. The refractory metal may form 50-90 per cent. of the product, and the ratio of cobalt to iron may be between 0.5 and 1.25 to 1. The refractory metal base may be made by compressing the powders or by using an organic binder such as shellac and alcohol; the porous product is then impregnated with the copper alloy, for example, by heating to between the melting points of the copper alloy and the refractory metal. Heat-treatment may comprise quenching from 750-1075‹C. followed by ageing at 450- 600‹C. Specification 511,461 is referred to.
