Abstract
An electrode for machining &c. by sparking is made by sintering at below 1600 DEG C. a mixture consisting of 70-95 per cent of one or more refractory metals (e.g. W, Mo) or carbides thereof, and 5-30 per cent of one or more metals or alloys (e.g. Fe, Ni, Cu, Co or alloys thereof) whose melting point is below the sintering temperature and which is or are capable of dissolving the refractory metal(s) or carbide(s) at that temperature. In an example electrodes intended for the disintegration of tapping dies by sparking were made by sintering at 1500 DEG C. a powdered mixture of 90 per cent W, 7 per cent Ni and 3 per cent Cu. The rough mass was machined to the required dimensions and brazed to an electrode holder.
