Abstract

644,463. Furnace electrodes. SOC. ANON. VETRERIA ITALIANA BALZARETTI MODIGLIANI. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34574. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1942. [Class 39(iii)] A glass melting electrode comprises two coaxial metallic tubes 1, 2 having an intervening filling of a fire proof material 3. A central pipe 4 conveys a cooling fluid to the electrode tip 6, the fluid returning within the inner tube 2 to a drain pipe 11. The electrode surface may be sheathed with graphite, platinum, a metal alloy such as stainless steel or a precious or noble metal. The sheath may be screwed on to the electrode or constrained into position. In the latter case the outer tube 1 is preferably provided with an undulated surface and the engaging surfaces given a slightly conical form with an intervening layer of a mouldable material having good electrical and thermal conductive properties.
