Abstract

1300439 Two-part couplings BUNKERRAMO CORP 30 June 1970 [22 July 1969] 31706/70 Heading H2E [Also in Division C1] A hermetically sealed electrical connector capable of maintaining hermetic integrity in the range -55‹ to 225‹ C. comprises a hollow metal shell 12 of an aluminium alloy with an opening 24 therethrough into which is fused a glass insulator 26 with at least one electrical contact 28 passing therethrough and fused with the insulator; the contact 28 being of metal, such as copper, having a coefficient of thermal expansion matched to that of the glass insulator; the glass having a working point lower than the melting point of the metal shell and the metal shell having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the glass but not more than one and one-half times that of the glass. The aluminium alloy has a yield strength in the annealed condition of at least 15,000 pounds per square inch, preferably >21,000, has a coefficient of thermal expansion about 23 x 10<SP>-6</SP>/‹ C. The glass used has a coefficient of thermal expansion of 17 x 10<SP>-6</SP>/‹ C., the same as the copper contacts, which may have a coating of Ni, Rh or other oxidation resistant metal.
