Abstract

1,026,858. Semi-conductor devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 12, 1965 [Feb. 18, 1964], No. 6174/65. Heading H1K. In a method of making a solderless contact between a semi-conductor crystal and a metal body, the surfaces are prepared by optical plane-polishing, coating one or both of the surfaces with a noble metal, such as gold, and placing the prepared surfaces in contact without the use of pressure or heat. The surfaces adhere due to molecular forces, but they can relatively easily be displaced laterally allowing differential expansion of the metal body and the crystal. The gold coatings are applied by evaporation in vacuo, and the application may be preceded and/or followed by degassing using heat or electron beam bombardment in vacuo. If the contact produced is too intimate to allow relative lateral movement of the metal body and the crystal an intermediate plate or disc of a metal having the same coefficient of expansion as the semi-conductor material is hard soldered to the metal body and connected to the crystal as described above.
