Abstract

687,259. Glass-to-metal seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 14, 1951 [Nov. 15, 1950], No. 26672/51. Class 36. A glass-to-metal seal is made by silver-plating the metal member, applying an indium coating thereover and casting glass into contact with the indium-plated portion. The metal member may be an iron alloy containing nickel and/or cobalt and the glass is one having a matching coefficient of expansion, for example one described in Specification 449,807, [Group XXIII]. After cleaning, the metal is silverplated in two steps, then hydrogen annealed. A thin film of indium is plated on and the member rinsed and dried. The glass-to-metal seal is made by casting the glass as described in Specification 545,426.
