Abstract

739,721. Glass-metal seals. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1952], No. 29327/52. Class 36. In making a hermetic seal between glass and a metal or alloy having a coefficient of expansion matching that of the glass and being capable of combining with chromium, the metal or alloy is given a coating between 1 and 10 microns thick of chromium or nickel and chromium and heat treated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to bond the chromium thereto by interdiffusion, the outer surface of the coating being oxidized before sealing to the glass. The base may be of tungsten or of nickel-iron, nickel-cobalt-iron, nickel-iron-chromium or iron chromium alloys which have a low or stabilized carbon content, and the chromium layer may be deposited thereon by electro-plating. The heat treatment may take place at about 1000‹ C. in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen for between 30 seconds and 5 minutes.
