Abstract

A composite body which includes a metallic component and a component of porous material, the metallic component comprising at least in its surface region a readily oxidizable metal, is made by placing a surface of one of said components in contact with a surface of the other component and heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature sufficiently high to form a layer of oxide of the readily oxidizable metal but below the temperature at which fusion or decomposition of either component would occur, and for a time sufficient to result in the formation of a bond between the contacting surfaces by virtue of the oxide. The metallic component may be of mild steel or low alloy steel such as one consisting of C 0.205 per cent, Si 0.14 per cent, S 0.021 per cent, P 0.029 per cent, Mn 0.68 per cent, Ni 0.11 per cent, Cr 0.135 per cent, Mo 0.57 per cent, Cu 0.10 per cent, Sn 0.21 per cent, Fe remainder, and may itself be porous. The porous component may be of metal, graphite or refractory ceramic. The components may be held together under pressure during the heating. Preferably, for mild steel or low alloy steel and graphite, a load of 0.1-2 tons/sq. inch is applied to one of the components, while both are heated in CO2 at 500 DEG -1000 DEG C. for 20-200 hours. Heating may also be effected in air or oxygen.
