Abstract
A powder mixture of uranium dioxide with an oxide of chromium, molybdenum, nickel, iron or niobium is compacted and heated in an inert atmosphere or under reduced pressure to reduce the metal oxide to metal at the boundary with the dioxide. If the component oxides are intimately mixed a cermet of uranium dioxide in metal results, whilst if the oxides are in layers, metal is formed between the layers and may be bonded to one oxide layer or both.
