Abstract
634,657. Glass-to-metal seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. Jan. 30, 1947, No. 2927. [Class 36] A gas-tight seal between aluminium, or an alloy of which aluminium is a major constituent, and glass, is made by the use of soft lead borate glass, e.g. that described in Specification 625,466, [Group XXIII], of such a low melting- point that the aluminium is neither wholly oxidized nor starts to flow during the formation of the seal. If the formation is of base metal, such as iron or nickel alloy, a coating of aluminium is first applied. A thin aluminium diaphragm for closing an aperture in a metal supporting-part may be sealed in position by first surrounding the aperture with a thin layer of low melting-point glass which may be applied in powdered form. A preferred sealing combination comprises a base of aluminium-coated 48 per cent nickel-iron alloy sealed to a glass part consisting of PbO, 30 per cent; SiO2, 57 per cent; Al2O3, 1 per cent; K2O, 8 per cent; and Na2O, 4 per cent, superposed on a thin layer of glass consisting of PbO, 83 per cent; B2O3, 12 per cent, and ZnO, 5 per cent.
