Abstract

686,519. Coating surfaces with glass. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). Oct. 5, 1951, No. 23229/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 56. [Also in Group XXXVI] Molybdenum or tungsten surfaces, particularly of electric leading-in wires for evacuated devices, are protected against oxidation by applying thereto powdered glass (e.g. in a suspension) having a compatible coefficient of expansion, and firing in a neutral atmosphere to fuse the glass thereto as a protective enamel coating. A glass member (e.g. a glass bead for sealing in) is subsequently fused, in air, on to an intermediate portion only of the protective enamel coating, or an intermediate portion of the coating itself may be used for the sealing in.
