Abstract
616,169. Metal-to-glass seals. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 22, 1946, No. 5585. Convention date, March 29, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36] [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (c)] A metal-supported vacuum-tight vitreous seal for use as a window for electromagnetic waves between two sections of a hollow waveguide comprises a glass member filling an aperture in a metal plate so as to be flush with both sides thereof, the glass member having the same coefficient of expansion as the plate. The glass member may be secured in a circular or rectangular aperture in a metal annulus which in turn is secured in an aperture in the metal plate. The glass is a borosilicate glass and the metal-support consists of an ironnickel-cobalt alloy. The edges of the glassfilled aperture are preferably rounded and oxidized prior to the insertion of the glass. The glass member may comprise an outer portion suitable for sealing to metal, and an inner portion suitable for the transmission of electromagnetic waves.
