Abstract

632,691. Glass-to-metal seals. WESTING. HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 10, 1947, No. 9592. Convention date, March 29, 1943. [Class 36] [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (c)] A glass window 99 for coupling electromagnetic waves between waveguides 91, 95 has the same coefficient of expansion as that of the metal supporting-plate 89. The metal plate is preferably of an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy and the glass a borosilicate. The edges of the aperture for the glass are rounded and oxidized. The glass is pressed into the aperture and while soft, the plate is turned to utilize the effect of gravity to position the surfaces of the glass in the same planes as the corresponding surfaces of the plate, molten glass being added or subtracted as necessary. A closer degree of uniformity may be obtained by grinding the glass after the seal is formed. The metal plate is maintained at such a temperature whilst forming the seal that the oxide partially dissolves in the glass. Specification 616,169 is referred to.
