Abstract

724,195. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BROOK, F. Oct. 20, 1952 [Oct. 19, 1951], No. 24497/51. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL(b). The window of a waveguide for use in a magnetron or a linear accelerator comprises a central refractory part of sapphire or ceramic material joined to a less refractory outer portion of glass which is sealed to the metal waveguide. The outer portion may comprise two or more rings of glasses of different thermal expansion coefficients sealed together to form a graded seal matching on one side the refractory material and on the other the metal. In sealing a disc of sapphire to glass it may be supported on a block of refractory material with an annular silver. washer intervening between the disc and the block; the open end of a glass tube is rested on the ,washer and the block is heated until the end of the glass tube softens and seals to the edge of the disc. Fig. 1 shows a magnetron in which one of the cavities 15 is coupled by a channel, defined by exponentially curved lips 17, to a circular wave guide 18 having a window comprising a sapphire disc 22 sealed to it by a cup-shaped glass member 23. The anode block is surrounded by a water-jacket 2 for cooling purposes. Specification 704.118 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
