Abstract

817,324. Vitreous or ceramic-to-metal seals. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 27, 1954], No. 34446/54. Class 36. [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (b)] The output window of a hermetically sealed H.F. device is sealed to the device at a position where there is no H.F. field. The output cavity of the device 10 (a klystron) is coupled by an iris 12 to a short length 14 of circular waveguide attached to a flange 13 of the klystron. The guide 14 terminates in flange 15 having an annular choke slot 16. A conical quartz, ceramic or sapphire window 17 is provided with a flange 18 the rim of which is joined to a cylindrical member 19 composed of several rings of glass forming a graded seal. The glass seal is attached to a metal ring 20 forming the edge of a bellows 21 brazed to the flange 13. On completion of the seal the device is heated to a temperature of e.g. 750‹ C., and evacuated. During evacuation the flange 18 of the window is sucked into close contact with the waveguide flange 15, this movement being taken up by the bellows 21. An external waveguide 22 having a flange 23 and choke slot 24 is aligned with the guide 14 and held in position by bolts 25. A modification is described (Fig. 2, not shown), in which the window is planar.
