Abstract
988,142. Matched transmission-line seals; transit-time tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 17, 1961 [Aug. 3, 1960], No. 26820/60. Headings H1D and H1W. The hermetic seal 8 of a matched dielectric window 7, e.g. for a klystron or magnetron, is situated within a choke slot 6 lying in the direction of propagation of the transmitted energy. The seal 7 may be conical or domeshaped and may be made of ceramic material, quartz or glass. It is sealed to a metallic ring 9 by means of a graded seal 8 consisting of rings of glass. The bottom of the choke slot 6 is short-circuited by means of an annular spring 13. The seal may be cooled by water circulating in passages 14. In order to make the choke slot effective over a broad frequency band, it may have stepped sides. The slot shown has a length of one wavelength. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the window is of tapered tubular form and extends between two seals located in choke slots in the inner and outer conductors of a coaxial line.
