Abstract
856,817. Waveguide seals. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. April 30, 1957 [June 13, 1956], No. 13775/57. Class 40(8). A gas-tight waveguide window is positioned at a distance from an abrupt discontinuity between two waveguides such that it provides a broad-band impedance match between the guides. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) two rectangular waveguides of equal characteristic impedance are joined by a circular waveguide of higher characteristic impedance. The circular section guide is one half wavelength long and is provided with a quartz or alumina window half-way along its length. The thickness of the window and its distance from the rectangular guides are such as to cancel out the mismatch due to discontinuities. In a modification, the circular guide section is provided by a flexible copper member 8 within which the window 11 is sealed. The member 8 is hermatically sealed between the flanges of rectangular waveguides 5, 12. With the flange 6 it forms a half-wavelength choke composed of two quarter-wavelength sections of different impedances.
