Abstract
839,219. Impedance matching. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1957 [Oct. 30, 1956], No. 33390/57. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] A microwave mixer circuit comprises mixer crystals arranged in a hollow guide which on one side of the crystals includes an axial conductor so that on one side H10 mode waves are supported and on the other TEM waves, the arrangement further being such that the H10 waves will not pass to the TEM wave source and vice versa. In the Figure two mixer crystals 7, 8 are connected to a central conductor 2 in a wave-guide 1. A first signal is applied to the waveguide to produce H10 waves and a second signal is applied to a second waveguide 3 and injected into the waveguide 1 in the form of a TEM wave by means of an adjustable probe 4. This wave cannot pass along guide 1 beyond the end of the conductor 2 and the H10 wave cannot pass through the coupling between the guides to guide 3. The two mixer crystals may be arranged in between laterally extending housings as shown in Fig. 4 between conducting strips 15, 26 extending to the side walls of the guide. The I.F. signal may be extracted from a coil 25, D.C. being applied to the crystal through a potentiometer 23 which may be adjusted so that the crystals are balanced. The circuit may be further balanced by means of a screw 27 which adjusts laterally the position of conductor 26. In alternative arrangements (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the two crystals are arranged in push-pull and parallel respectively.
