Abstract
828,565. Waveguide impedances. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. May 17, 1957 [May 21, 1956], No. 15755/57. Class 40 (8). A hollow waveguide 6 of rectangular crosssection has an L-shaped conductive element or rod 9 supported on one wall 7; the effective length of the supporting portion 12 being an odd integral of quarter free space wavelengths and that of the remainder 13 being a half freespace wavelength at the operative frequency. The waveguide transmits the T.E. mode with its electric field E linearly polarized perpendicular to the wider walls 7 and 8. The rod which is rotatably and slidably connected to wall 7 at 10, is coupled to the field by section 12 and forms an impedance branch, being resonant when section 13 is a half-wavelength long, Fig. 2. In addition to rod 9, rods 18 and 19 in the same transverse plane may be added to vary the characteristics and they may be spaced from rod 9 by more than a quarter-wavelength; rod 19 having, if required, a reactance opposite in sign but equal in magnitude to that of rod 9. Rods 21, 24 and 27 may also be used in combination with rod 9, the latter being coupled to the field thereby. Conductive discs such as 14 may be fixed to the inner ends of the rods.
