Abstract

641,795. Wave-guides. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. March 20, 1947, No. 7738. Convention date, March 22, 1946. [Class 40 (viii)] An adjustable phase shifter for a wave-guide comprises a length of transmission conduit 11 containing a mass of dielectric material 12 extending a substantial distance along the conduit and occupying only a fraction of the cross-section thereof, and adjustable transversely of its length between positions of strong and weak electric field. The ends 41 and 43 of the mass may be tapered as shown to avoid reflections of the transmitted wave and the length of the mass may be substantially equal to one half the operating wave-length. The mass 12 is mounted on metal rods 27 and 29 connected by a bridge 37 for common operation. The latter also bears an indicator 40 moving over a scale 39.
