Abstract
1,250,720. Suppressing waveguide modes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 27 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15999/69. Heading H1W. Unwanted waveguide modes are suppressed by means of a suitably positioned dielectric resonator which is associated with a dissipative element. The resonator 16 may consist of a cylinder 11 of TiO 2 dimensioned to resonate at an appropriate frequency in a TE mode. Such a mode is excited when the resonator is placed in an R.F. magnetic field coincident with its axis. Thus, a resonator 16 placed as shown in a rectangular waveguide 15 will couple to the TE 30 mode, which it is desired to suppress, but not to the fundamental TE 10 mode. Energy thus coupled to the resonator is dissipated in a resistive element which may consist of an annular film 12 of tantalum having a resistance equal to the characteristic impedance of the selected mode. A number of such resonators may be distributed at appropriate positions in the same transverse plane. They may be imbedded in a support member made of a material of low dielectric constant. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) illustrate arrangements for suppressing: (a) the TE 20 mode, (b) the orthogonal TE 03 and TE 30 modes in a square guide.
