Abstract
766,612. Cavity resonators. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 8, 1954 [Jan. 4, 1954], No. 35582/54. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] A cavity resonator comprises a polygonal prism with a coaxial prismatic re-entrant member therein having the same number of sides and disposed with its corners opposite the sides of the outer prism. The Figures show an amplifier comprising two pentagonal reentrant cavities 11, 12 used as the common input and output cavities of five parallel connected valves. The input cavity comprises a dividing plate 10, a pentagonal side wall 22, an end wall 20 and an adjustable pentagonal re-entrant member 21 while the output cavity comprises the partition plate 10, pentagonal side wall 41, an end wall 40 and a pentagonal re-entrant member 49, 48. Five valves 13 are arranged at the corners of the cavity and the flat sides of the re-entrant members are arranged opposite the corners of the outer prism so that the volume of the cavities are at a minimum. The input signal is applied through a concentric line 29, 80 to a matching section 30. This comprises an outer cylindrical conductor 85 (Fig. 4), connected to two parallel connected strips 82, 83 and an inner conductor consisting of two parallel connected strips 77, 78, the upper ends of which are connected to the partition plate 10. Impedance matching is effected by rotating the outer cylinder and with it the strips 82, 83, whereby the capacitance between these strips and the inner strips is varied. The output cavity resonator is tuned by two pentagonal plungers 43, 53 which are normally arranged to be spaced half-wave lengths apart. The output signal is derived from a coaxial line 58 comprising a reduced section member 70<1> slidable within the sleeve 59 to effect matching. The band width of the amplifier may be varied by varying the coupling between the output circuit and the output cavity and this is effected by five inductive studs 65, 66 connected effectively in parallelwith the output cavity.
