Abstract

1350745 Transistor amplifying and oscillator circuits HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 1 March 1973 [3 March 1972 (2)] 10056/73 Heading H3T A microwave device comprises an elliptical conductive cavity 10 adapted to transmit microwave energy, a plurality of amplifying means being positioned around its periphery, energy being introduced at one focus, e.g. by cable 22, and extracted at the second focus, e.g. by cable 50. In the embodiment the amplifying means comprise tunnel diodes 30b inserted in cavities, e.g. 20b in a conductive ring-shaped member 28 and coupled to the incident energy by means of probes 24b &c. The coupling is adjusted by means of adjustable screws 38b, 40b &c., while each of the cavities 20b is tuned by means of a corresponding adjusting screw 36b &c. Conductive partitions 42b &c. prevent interactions between the tunnel diodes, which may comprise amplifiers or oscillators synoronized to the incoming frequency. Unwanted resonances in the cavity 10 are prevented by means of blocks 52, 54, 56 of absorbing material along its major axis, alternatively a number of metallic vanes may be inserted along this axis, coupled to absorbing material (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). In a modification, tunnel diodes are located around only one half of the perimeter of the cavity, a wedge of absorbing material being placed around the other (Figs, 7, 8, not shown).
