Abstract
799,172. Non-reciprocal attenuators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 24, 1956, No. 29077/56. Class 40 (8). A uni-directional attenuator comprises a main waveguide, e.g. of the strip-line or coaxial type, and its sub which are both adapted for the propagation of an approximate T.E.M. mode and are coupled together to produce a circularly polarized magnetic field. A static magnetic field is applied to some ferromagnetic ceramic material, e.g. nickel-zinc ferrite, located within the circularly polarized region to condition it for gyromagnetic resonance. In one form the guide comprises a strip-like conductor 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, a ground plane conductor 4 and a dielectric 3 which extends between them. A strip-line stub 5 includes a strip-like conductor 5 which extends at 90 degrees from, and is integral and coplanar with, the main guide. The stub also incorporates the same dielectric and ground plane sheeting as the main guide. The ferrite 6 is inserted in a hole drilled through the ground plane, dielectric and strip conductors. An auxiliary strip-line stub 9, symmetrically opposite stub 5, may be used to improve the matching. Polepieces 7, 8 (not shown) provide the static field. The strip-line waveguide may alternatively be of the sandwich form.
