Abstract
848,113. Waveguide switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and WALSH, A. S. Aug., 20, 1958 [Aug. 20, 1957], No. 26330/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(c)] Two transmission paths, e.g. waveguides 1, 2, are coupled at spaced points by directional couplers 3, 4, a 180 degree non-reciprocal phase-shifter 7 being inserted in one of the paths between the couplers. The couplers are of the type which effect an equal division of input energy between two outputs, the two outputs being in phase quadrature. They may be of the branched-guide or long slot type. If the magnetic field controlling the phase-shifter 7 is set to change by 180 degrees the phase of waves travelling from left to right in the guide 1 and to have no effect on waves travelling in the opposite direction, then it may be seen that, taking into account the 90 degree phase-shift inherent in the couplers 3, 4, total coupling of energy is effected from terminal A to terminal B, from B to C and from D to A. Reversal of the magnetic field in the phaseshifter 7 causes reversal of its properties. Under these conditions the coupling directions are:- A to D, D to C and B to A. The non-reciprocal phase-shifter 7 is of the known type using a slab 24 of ferrite asymmetrically disposed in the guide 1, a polythene member 28 being disposed in the other guide 2 to equalize the electrical lengths of the guides. The reversible magnetic field is generated by a solenoid associated with a commutator. When the arrangement is used as a duplexer, terminal A (the transmitter terminal) is provided with an isolator 9.
