Abstract

905,689. Waveguides. DECCA Ltd. April 17, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 14272/60. Class 40 (8). A waveguide transmission system makes use of a rectangular waveguide 13 in which a plane polarized TE wave is transmitted with its electric field parallel to the longer sides. The dimensions of the longer sides are such that the guide is capable of propagating more than one mode, but mode filters are used to suppress all except TE no modes. These filters may take the form of resistive films (e.g. of NiCr alloy) or filaments 20, Fig. 4, extending across the guide parallel to the shorter sides. The short dimension of the guide may be such that modes with more than one half-period of the electric vector are evanescent. Preferably, however, this dimension is great enough to allow propagation of the TE 20 mode and this mode is suppressed by means of slots or arrays of slots or holes 21 arranged on the median lines of the shorter sides. These slots communicate with absorbing means 22. It is possible to use a waveguide capable of supporting third or higher order modes, but in this case it is necessary to use additional slots to suppress the modes of odd order. These slots are situated on either side of the median lines of the shorter sides at the nodal points of the TE 03 mode. They communicate with auxiliary waveguides or resonators designed to absorb the unwanted modes. It is stated that the attenuation is proportional to a factor C 1 /a+C 2 /b, where C 1 , C 2 are constants and a, b are the dimensions of the waveguide. By making a, b large enough, the losses are reduced compared with those of a normal rectangular waveguide. Coupling of the enlarged guide 13 to a normal waveguide 12 is effected by means of a linearly tapered rectangular section 14. The waveguide may contain H-plane bends, consisting of a section 35, Fig. 8, of bent waveguide, displaced, with respect to the straight sections 13, towards the centre of curvature of the bend. The resultant shoulders are closed with conductive material. This construction is stated to prevent coupling between the TE 01 and TE 02 modes. The waveguide may be sealed by means of a dielectric seal 40, Fig. 9, which is located in and matched to the waveguide by means of inductive projections 42 which extend across the longer walls.
