Abstract

1,090,443. Gyromagnetic phase-shifters and attenuators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 31, 1965 [Sept. 14, 1964], No. 37131/65. Heading H1W. A reciprocal gyromagnetic transmission device for providing either phase-shift or attenuation comprises a symmetrically arranged member of gyromagnetic material and means for establishing in the member closed-loop magnetization in planes parallel to the direction of propagation. As shown, a slab 26 of ferrite extends between the centre lines of the broad faces 21, 22 of a rectangular waveguide 20. Zones 33 of magnetization are established in the ferrite member by current-carrying conductors 30 which extend through holes in the member and in the narrow sides of the guide (these may be omitted). The magnetization may be of a magnitude sufficient to cause resonance absorption or sufficient to produce a desired phase shift. This magnitude depends upon the distribution of the conductors 30, the strength of the currents and the directions of the currents in adjacent conductors, the latter factors being controlled e.g. by switches 39, 41, 42. If the ferrite has a square-loop hysteresis characteristic, current pulses may be used to effect changes in magnetization. In this case, a pulse generator is used to selectively energize the conductors through a suitable switching matrix. Demagnetization is effected by energizing an axial conductor 44.
