Abstract
1,116,953. Microwave switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 31 Aug., 1965 [14 Sept., 1964], No. 37130/65. Heading H1W. A microwave switch comprises a gyromagnetic element arranged in a waveguide and means for producing closed-loop magnetization of the element in planes parallel to the direction of propagation, the magnetized volume of the element being such that it produces a high reflective impedance (when magnetized) over a certain band of frequencies. The effect is produced at field strengths below that necessary to cause gyromagnetic resonance. As shown, the means for producing the required magnetization consists of a current-carrying conductor 53 which passes back and forth in transverse directions through an elongated ferrite block 51 arranged symmetrically within the guide. The effect is reciprocal and is independent of the direction of the current. The block may also be magnetized in transverse planes by a further conductor 62 passing axially through it. Such magnetization produces a condition of transparency. By means of the switching system shown, the two wires may be connected in series and the same current passed through them. It is stated that, in this case, for one direction of the current the block is transmissive and for the other direction it is reflective. The current may be reversed by means of the commutator 70. If a ferrite having a square-loop hysteresis characteristic is used, the device may be operated by current pulses and holding currents are unnecessary. A modification of restricted bandwidth is described (Fig. 1, not shown), in which the ferrite element is in the form of a cube and the conductor 53 passes through it only once.
