Abstract
803,626. Impedance matching. POLYTECHNIC RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO., Inc. July 19, 1956 [Oct. 25, 1955], No. 22439/56. Class 40 (8). A thermistor bead 1 is mounted in a section of ridged rectangular waveguide 2 between the ridge 7 and the opposite broad wall of the waveguide. This enables the connecting leads to be kept short so that the thermistor presents a substantially resistive impedance. The ridge 7 has a uniform width of about one-fifth of the broad dimension of the guide and is provided with quarter-wavelength steps 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d designed. to provide constant characteristic impedance at the input over the frequency band utilized. The end of the waveguide is shortcircuited by a plate 8 and the length of the end section 7f is chosen so that an open circuit is seen by the thermistor bead. The height of the ridge in section 7f is designed so that the impedance of this section is three times the impedance of the ridged waveguide. The thermistor output lead is connected to the inner conductor of a coaxial line 4. A conductive bead 6a and dielectric washer 6b provide a path to earth for microwave energy. Alternatively, the output terminal of the bead may be connected to the central conductor of the connector 4 through a half-wavelength stub line.
