Abstract
693,654. Aerials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CRONIN, D. E. March 14, 1952 [March 21, 1951], No. 6822/51. Class 40 (vii). An aerial comprises a wave-guide orifice which is flush with a conducting metal surface 9 and is surrounded by a gap 7 in the conducting surface of such a depth, for example a quarterwavelength, that a high impedance is presented between the orifice and the conducting surface. By this means coupling between the orifice and surface is reduced, thus preventing distortion of the directivity pattern of the aerial system by currents flowing in the metal conducting surface. The waveguide is preferably of circular section and radiates circularly-polarized radiation. The wave-guide orifice may be closed by a member forming a window across the waveguide and both the guide and the gap 7 may be filled with a solid dielectric material, e.g. polythene.
