Abstract

721,098. Multiplex radio signalling; directive radio systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 11, 1953 [May 10, 1952], No. 13091/53. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (7). Waves of one frequency are launched into the throat of a horn and waves of a second frequency, and parallel polarization, are launched by means coupled through the sides of the horn, each exciting means including means for rejecting the waves of the other. In the embodiment described, the horn 11 is flared in the vertical direction only, the radiation of higher frequency F<SP>1</SP> being carried by a wave-guide 25 attached to the throat 13 and matched by an iris 27. The radiation of lower frequency F<SP>2</SP> is coupled to a transverse probe 29, supported by and coupled to filter sections 31, 33 that match its coaxial feeder to the horn and prevent the transmission of energy at frequency F<SP>1</SP>. The filters comprise coaxial line sections having uniform outer conductors 35, 37, a common inner conductor 39, supported by a dielectric bead 41 and shorting disc 43, portions 45 of the inner conductor being enlarged to provide the desired characteristics. The wave-guide 25 is below the critical size for conveying energy of frequency F<SP>2</SP>. To improve the directional pattern in the horizontal plane, flared conductive plates 47, 49 provide extensions of the flared side-pieces of the horn. A stepped dielectric lens 55 closing the horn mouth reduces undesired side lobes in the vertical pattern and enables the horn to be pressurized. To prevent distortion of the radiation pattern of frequency F<SP>1</SP> the length of probe 29 may be reduced by the provision of quarter-wave coaxial chokes at quarter-wave intervals. The horn may be used for transmission or reception at both frequencies.
