Abstract

1,270,219. Aerials. SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc. 12 May, 1970 [12 May, 1969], No. 23032/70. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises a cavity having two opposed apertures and an internal centrallysupported coupling device, which consists of two conductive plates respectively facing said apertures and a conductive tapered portion. The wide end of the tapered portion is attached to one plate, and its narrow end is adjacent the other plate. A feed means is connected between said narrow end and said other plate. As described, a cavity 10 which is formed in a vertical stabilizer 11 of an aircraft has conductive walls 12, 13, 14, 15 which define apertures on opposite sides of said stabilizer. A coupling device 18 is normally located centrally in the cavity, being held in position by a low dielectric constant foam material contained between two fibre-glass or other dielectric material plates 16, 17 attached to the stabilizer 11 (as shown in Fig. 1, the plate 17 and the coupling device 18 have been removed from the cavity 10). In the coupling device 18 the apex of a conductive conical or pyramidal portion 21 is spaced from a conductive plate 20 by a dielectric material support 22. A further conductive plate 19 may be attached to the base of the portion 21. The inner conductor of a coaxial cable 23 is connected to the apex of the portion 21, and the outer conductor thereof is connected to the plate 20. For impedance matching purposes, a stub 26 is connected between the plate 20 and the top wall of the cavity 10. It is stated that the arrangement provides wide band omni-directional operation.
