Abstract

714,974. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 11, 1952 [July 26, 1951], No. 17574/52. Class 40 (7) In a vertically stacked arrangement of two independent antenna systems each antenna unit of the lower system comprises a pair of radiators with a conductive duct for feeders to the upper antenna units passing internally through them and means for isolating the radiators from the ducts. In one embodiment the upper antenna 1 may be for a radio beacon and comprise units fed by waveguides 3 and 4. These guides pass down through the duct in the lower array consisting of elements 2 and the duct also contains a number of coaxial feeders 27, 27a, 27b, 27c, and 8 for the lower array. The radiators may be dipoles comprising cylindrical members, frustro-conical members, rectangular horns or other elements suitably shaped for surrounding the duct and in each case the radiators are electrically isolated from the duct passing through them by quarter wavelength radio frequency chokes. A suitable mechanical mounting and feeding arrangement for rectangular horn elements is described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). One feed arrangement for a pair of cylindrical members 39 and 40 attached to the outside of supporting ducts 44 and 45 by discs at their inner extremities consists of a co-axial cable 48 feeding across the gap between the members. Isolating chokes 43 are provided on the ducts.
