Abstract

874,656. Aerials. ANDREW CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 25954/57. Class 40(7) [Also in Group XL(b) ] A feed element for an aerial, e.g. a parabolic aerial, comprises outer, intermediate, and inner conductors extending into a cavity having a surface of revolution and an open end which faces the directive element, the cavity and the conductors being coaxial. The feed element will receive and/or transmit cross-polarized signals on the same or different frequencies simultaneously. In one embodiment a cavity member 14, Figs. 1 and 2, has isolating fins 21, 22 mounted on the outer conductor 13 of a feed line which consists of three conductors, 11, 12, 13. The member 17 is transparent to the waves radiated or received by the aerial and is placed at the focal point of the reflector or lens. Tuned pairs of slots 24, 25 and 27, 28 are provided in the outer conductor, one pair being in the front part 18 and one in the rear part 20 of cavity 14. The intermediate 12 and inner 11 conductors of the feed line are shaped as shown, connections 29 and 26 connecting the respective conductors to the outer conductor 13. The cavity parts 18 and 20 may be tuned to the same or different frequencies and the radiations emitted will be cross polarized due to the positioning of the tuned slots. The slots may be loaded by dipoles for impedance matching. In a second embodiment the feed element has no isolating fins. In Figs. 8 and 10 the outer conductor 13 has a pair of slots 38, 39, and the intermediate conductor 12 a pair of slots 43, 44. Loading dipole elements 34, 36 are provided on the intermediate conductor and mounted in insulators 35, 37, and dipole elements 40, 41 are mounted direct on the outer conductor 13. In a further embodiment, Fig. 12, the outer conductor has slots 51, 52 loaded with dipole elements 45 (only one shown), and a further pair of slots 47 (only one shown) with associated dipole elements 49, 50. The slots 51, 52 extend to the end of the outer conductor. In the last two forms of feed element each conductor is connected to its adjacent conductor.
