Abstract

805,478. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 5, 1957 [April 6, 1956], No. 11187/57. Class 40 (7). An omnidirectional aerial capable of transmitting and receiving circularly polarized radiation comprises two juxtaposed conductive reflectors 1 and 2 in the form of surfaces of revolution having a common axis 3. The first reflector 1 is concave and normally paraboloidal whilst the second 2 is conical, tapered in the direction of the first and has an opening 4 coaxial with the common axis and associated with an arrangement within the conical reflector for feeding circularly polarized energy to or from the aerial. The feeder may be a coaxial transmission line 7 and in one embodiment it is divided at 18 to feed two orthogonally arranged probes 17 in a round or square radiating waveguide S. Energy fed to the probes is phased to produce circularly polarized waves which are reflected in a substantially parallel beam by reflector 1 and radiated horizontally and omnidirectionally after reflection by conical reflector 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the line 7 is coupled to a helical element arranged along the axis of the waveguide S.
