Abstract

1378355 Aerials BALL BROS RESEARCH CORP 2 Jan 1973 173/73 Heading H4A An aerial assembly comprises spaced apart first and second sheets 20, 18 of electrically conductive material defining a pair of slots 26, 28 separated from each other by a distance substantially equivalent to a quarter-wavelength at the anticipated mean operating frequency. The slot 26 is bridged by electrically conductive means, e.g. by soldering, to form a resonant cavity with the slot 28 constituting a radiator. An associated feed means comprises a set of ribbon-like leads 52 which are connected at spaced apart positions to the sheet 20 adjacent the slot 28. As described, the two sheets are separated by a thin, flexible layer 24 of dielectric material such as polytetrafluoroethylene, and they may be thin copper claddings thereupon, the leads 52 and the remaining parts of a feed and impedance matching network 40 being formed by printed circuit techniques. The flat assembly shown in Fig. 5 may be rolled into cylindrical form as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the edges of the layer 24 being secured together utilizing apertures 61. The aerial assembly may then be fitted over the cylindrical body of a missile, and be excited by a source contained therein. The missile body acts as a "fat" asymmetrical wide-band dipole, and a substantially isotropic radiation pattern is developed, apart from deep nulls fore and aft (Fig. 6, not shown). A source 30, Fig. 3, may be coupled via a coaxial jack assembly to the sheets 18, 20.
