Abstract

728,463. Microwave electric filters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 27, 1952 [July 5, 1951], No. 16254/52. Class 40 (8). A microwave transmission system comprises a "line-above-ground" system 1a, 2a, Fig. 1, to which is coupled a quarter-wave coupled type of coaxial filter comprising an inner conductor 1 and an outer conductor 2, subdivided by diaphragms 6 to 11, the coupling sections defined by diaphragms 7, 8 and 9, 10 being each approximately a quarter wavelength long electrically. The diaphragms comprise discs, Fig. 2, having a large sector opening 12 which, for a frequency of 4700 megacycles may be 216 degrees. Adjustable screws 13, 14, 15 are provided to tune the cavities. The transmission system is coupled to the coaxial line 1b and 2b for launching the microwaves, the outer conductors 2 and 26 being each countersunk with respect to the upper surface of the ground conductor 2a to provide for impedance matching. A directly coupled cavity type of coaxial filter is described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown); other methods of coupling, in particular to systems in the form of a printed circuit, are described (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) in which the diaphragm may be an annular window in the form of a disc; it may also be a plurality of posts radially disposed between the centre and outer conductors.
