Abstract
734,629. Microwave transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 20, 1953 [April 2, 1952], No. 7827/53. Class 40 (8). A switch for a microwave transmission line of the " line-ground " type described in Specifications 704,050 and 708,601 comprises a movable switch member which includes a short section of one of the conductors. The transmission line of Fig. 1 comprises a narrow " line conductor 1 separated from a relatively wide ground " conductor 2 by a layer of dielectric 3 whose thickness is a small fraction of a quarter wavelength. A section 4 of the line conductor 1 is pivoted at 5 so as to be movable from a closed position to an open position in which it overlies a layer of resistive material 7 which forms a matched termination for the line. In the switch of Fig. 3 four line conductors 8, 9, 10, 11 are carried on a layer of dielectric 3a on the other side of which is carried the " ground " conductor 2a. A conductor segment 14 is carried on a square or circular block of dielectric 13 which is disposed in a recess in the dielectric layer 3a. The block 13 can be positioned so that either of the pairs of conductors 8, 9 or 10, 11 can be connected, the unconnected pair being terminated by blocks of resistive material 15, 16. A similar switch having three terminals is described (Fig. 5, not shown). The switch of Fig. 7 has four terminals 24, 25, 26, 27 which may be connected in pairs by conducting segments 30, 31 mounted on a block of dielectric 28. The block is keyed to the dielectric layer 3c between the lines 24 &c. and. the "ground" conductor 2c. The conductor 47 in the twoway switch of Fig. 13 forms a common ground conductor for the three terminals 42, 43, 44 and has an intermediate section 49 of hollow frustoconical form which merges into a hollow rectangular housing 50. A conical body 45 of dielectric material with a conductive surface 61 fits within the conical section 49 and ensures dielectric continuity between the dielectric layers 48 in the three terminals. The conical element 45 can be rotated to bring a metallic segment 57 into a position in which it connects the line 46 to one or the other of the lines 46a, 46b. The unconnected line is terminated by a resistive body 58 which forms part of the conical element 45.
