Abstract
828,580. Transmission line switching arrangements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 29, 1957 [Nov. 30, 1956], No. 37287/57. Class 40 (8). The " line" conductor of either of two spaced, parallel strip transmission lines may be contacted by a third, intermediate, movable conductor which forms a third strip transmission line in combination with the corresponding " ground " conductor. As shown, the parallel strip lines 20, 21 consist respectively of narrow " line conductors 25, 30 spaced by solid dielectric layers 24, 29 from broad " ground " conductors 26, 31. The lines are mounted in an insulating supporting block 9 consisting of a pile of spacing members. The line conductors 25, 30 are provided with terminal contacts 27, 32 arranged on the opposite sides of the dielectric layers in openings in the ground conductors 26, 31. A third line conductor, in the form of a movable contact spring 22, may be moved by means of an axially movable, cylindrical dielectric member 36 to contact the terminal of either of the line conductors 25, 30 whereby a third strip line is formed by the conductor 22 and one of the ground conductors 26, 31. The three lines are coupled to coaxial cables A, B, C, e.g. by soldering the tapered end 60, Fig. 3, of each line conductor to the inner conductor 41 of the corresponding coaxial line and soldering a strap 39 between the outer conductor 40 and the ground conductor. The movable cylindrical dielectric member 36 is actuated by a dielectric stud 8 attached to the arm of an armature 5. The armature is pivoted at 7 to the supporting bracket 4 of a solenoid 2. The gap between the armature and the core 3 of the solenoid is adjustable by means of a screw 6. The stud 8 is additionally arranged to operate a D.C. switch comprising a movable contact spring 19 and fixed contact springs 17, 18. One of the lines 20, 21 may be short-circuited to earth when it is out of circuit. As shown, the line and ground conductors of transmission line 21 are respectively provided with contacts 53, 33 which engage corresponding contacts on an earthed movable contact-spring 50 actuated by the dielectric cylinder 36. Specification 704,050 is referred to.
