Abstract
889,468. R.F. couplings. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Feb. 16, 1960 [March 21, 1959], No. 5425/60. Class 40(7). [Also in Group XL(b)] A microwave switch comprises a circulator having an adjustable short-circuit in the form of a movable conductive member in at least one branch. In the embodiment shown, two such switches, comprising ferrite 4-port circulators Z 1 , Z 2 , Fig. 1, are used to selectively connect two T.R. sets FG 1 , FG 2 (one of these being a standby) to a comon aerial A. The set FG 1 comprises a transmitter S 1 , using a frequency f 1 , and receiver E 1 , using a frequency f 2 , connected to the circulator Z 1 in the usual manner so as to decouple transmitter and receiver. The transmitter and receiver S 2 , E 2 of set FG 2 are connected in a similar manner to the circulator Z 2 and the remaining terminals of Z 2 are connected to the circulator Z 1 and to a matched load R. During operation of the set FG 1 the conductive members of adjustable short-circuits K 1 , K 2 are in their withdrawn, open-circuit, positions and have no effect. When it is desired to operate the standby set FG 2 the conductive members are moved to short-circuit branches L 11 , L 31 and wave-energy in these branches is reflected at the short-circuits. Thus the aerial A is coupled to the second circulator Z 2 and the second circulator is coupled to the aerial, the two circulators being effective to de-couple transmitter S 2 and receiver E 2 in the usual manner. The circulator branches connected to the transmitters and receivers may incorporate band-pass filters of the multi-cavity type and the movable members of the adjustable short-circuits may be arranged to de-tune a filter cavity in each of the branches L 11 , L 31 in order to render the filters reflective. In the modified arrangement of Fig. 3, receivers and transmitters S 1 , S 2 , E 1 , E 2 of T.R. sets FG 1 , FG 2 are connected through multi-cavity filters F 1 , F 3 , F 2 , F 4 to two branches of a single circulator, each common to the transmitter and receiver of a T.R. set. The separate branch of each transmitter and each receiver are made one quarterwavelength long between each filter and the common junction. In this arrangement it is only necessary to have two short-circuits either in the filters of S 1 and Eg or of E, and S 2 .
