Abstract

1285660 Circulators WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 29 Oct 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 51430/70 Heading H1W A circulator comprises three strip conductors 11, 12, 13 intermeshing at 120 degrees with each other in the vicinity of a ferrite element 14, the ends of the strips remote from their input/output ends being interconnected and coupled to earth by a common capacitance. As shown, the central portion of each of the three strips is divided into two conductors e.g. 21, 22, and the pairs of conductors are intermeshed in a symmetrical fashion by bridge pieces 28 and insulators 27 provided at the crossing points. The remote end of each strip is connected by a conductor 15 to an intermediate plane 16 and a variable capacitance established between plane 16 and ground plane 17 by means of a movable plate 31. This capacitance is denoted 51 and the three input ports denoted 1, 2, 3 in the diagram of Fig. 5. The capacitance may be used to adjust the frequency of operation of the circulator. Further, it is shown in the Specification that a change in capacitance may be used to reverse the direction of circulation of the device. A varactor diode 52 may be used to effect switching between two values of capacitance corresponding to opposite directions of circulation.
