Abstract

818,661. Aerials; aerial coupling arrangements. GENERAL BRONZE CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 32450/57. Class 40 (7). Relates to aerial feed apparatus for use at centimetre wavelengths in which the feed is correctly matched over a wide range of frequency by the addition of suitable reactances. The apparatus comprises a length of waveguide 22, Fig. 1, mounted on the axis of a paraboloidal reflector 20 and terminated by a horn 24 positioned approximately at the focus of the reflector. Radio-frequency energy is radiated through the two curved branches of the horn, Fig. 3, on to the reflector. Two apertures 46, one only seen in Fig. 1, serve as the radiating elements and these give a capacitive loading to the horn. By the addition of inductive reactance this capacitive loading is neutralized and a good match effected. As shown, inductive irises 56, 58 are added, their position and size being so chosen that the desired characteristics are obtained. Unwanted effects due to energy returned from the reflector to the horn may be eliminated by use of a pair of circular plates 64, 66 mounted on the reflector such that the normals to the centres of the plates intersect at the horn and which are of such position and size that the energy reflected from them to the horn is equal in magnitude but opposite in phase to the energy reflected back from the parabola.
