Abstract

708,614. Aerials. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. Aug. 27, 1952 [Aug. 31, 1951; March 12, 1952], No. 21574/S2. Class 40 (7) A directive antenna system consists of a parabolic reflector 1 with a waveguide 7 extending through the vertix of the reflector in the direction of the axis and coupled to primary elements at the focus consisting of two horns 3 and 4 by means of slots 8, 9, each horn being intended to illuminute half the surface of the reflector. The walls of the horns nearest the guide 7 may be coincident with the waveguide wall but are preferably arranged as in Fig. 4 to obtain the most even illumination of the reflector. The length of the horns is made small to reduce the shadow caused by them. To avoid mis-match due to energy reflected back into the horns a phase plate may be mounted on the surface of the reflector round the wave guide of such size and thickness that energy reflected back to the horn through it cancels energy reflected back from the rest of the reflector. To reduce the size of the wave guide and horns; these may be filled with a solid dielectric medium. Only one of them may be so filled if this assists in matching the two. Matching of the horns to the waveguide is also effected by varying the widths of the coupling slots 8, 9 and in order to obtain a purely resistive load a reactive waveguide extention 10 and/or an iris 11 in the guide may be used.
